Heidelberg (dpa / lsw) - A 40-year-old from Wiesloch (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis) hit and shook his little son so hard that he died.

The Heidelberg Regional Court sentenced the man to seven years in prison on Tuesday.

The confessing man and the public prosecutor said they did not want to appeal.

It is still unclear how the mother of the eight-month-old baby decides;

she had appeared as a joint plaintiff.

The separated parents took turns looking after the child.

The judges also ordered a stay in a rehab facility.

The man convicted of manslaughter had committed the act in May of this year while drunk and under drugs.

He admitted that he had wanted to "calm down" the crying child.

There are always cases in which overstrained parents shake their very young children and thereby damage or kill them. Doctors warn against it because it can injure the spine and brain.
