Hamburg (dpa / lno) - The children's rights organization Plan International has called on the federal government to do more for a fair distribution of vaccines against the corona virus worldwide.

"We know from our local employees that people are very worried that they will be left behind when accessing vaccines," said Plan managing director Maike Röttger in Hamburg.

"The disease can only be contained if everyone in the world can protect themselves against it in the long term."

The effects of the corona pandemic are fatal for everyone, said Röttger. "But especially for countless girls and young women in developing countries, the dangers are much greater." The exit restrictions put them at an extremely high risk of becoming a victim of domestic or sexual violence. "In addition, there is an increased risk that they will still be a minor and married against their will," reported Röttger. Even before the pandemic, many girls in developing countries had little chance of an education. The closure of schools has exacerbated this problem.
