Berlin / Halle (dpa) - The federal government does not evaluate the content of the judge's verdict against the assassin on the Halle synagogue, but welcomes the fact that a judgment has been made.

You do not comment on court rulings out of respect for the independence of the judiciary, said the deputy government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer on Monday in Berlin.

She added: "The Halle assassination showed us how important it is to continue the fight against anti-Semitism, xenophobia and anti-democracy in a more determined manner, and it is just a good thing that justice has been given today."

The Federal Government Commissioner for Victims of Terrorism, Edgar Franke, said that the Halle attack left deep wounds and demanded a lot from everyone whose lives it had changed.

"We must counter the hate of the perpetrator with the humanity and solidarity of our society."

Stand by the side of the victims.

"We will continue to be there for them, even many years after the attack."

The higher regional court in Naumburg had previously sentenced the right-wing extremist assassin to life imprisonment with subsequent preventive detention.

The judges found the 28-year-old guilty of double homicide and attempted homicide in numerous other cases and also determined the particular gravity of the guilt.

Early release from prison after 15 years is almost impossible.
