On October 26 in Finland, a cyberattack allowed a hacker to enter the system of Vastaamo, a psychiatric clinic.

The individual was thus able to collect the private data of more than 36,000 patients, distributed in 25 psychotherapy centers across the country, as reported by the Korii media.

In addition to asking for a traditional ransom, still amounting to 585,000 euros, the hacker also sent personal threats to dozens of patients.

Patients must each pay 200 euros in bitcoin within 24 hours of the message, otherwise the hacker, who goes by the nickname RANSOM_MAN, threatens to release their personal information.

Badly protected data?

The data of more than 300 patients has already found its way into a dark web forum, before being deleted.

The diagnoses and comments of psychiatrists were mentioned in particular.

This blackmail on particularly fragile people moved Finland a lot, but also reminded us of the importance of protecting medical data as much as possible, hackers having probably taken advantage of an easily identifiable security breach.
