Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) - The Corona crisis has hardly diminished the desire to marry couples in the Neubrandenburg region.

As the head of the registry office, Andreas Beck, said on Monday, a total of 305 marriages will be concluded in the third largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2020, only ten fewer than in 2019. "I would not have expected that after the uncertain spring," said Beck.

In 2018 there were 372, in 2017 there were 336 weddings in Neubrandenburg.

The number of weddings in March, April and May fell to almost zero because of the "lockdown".

"That was made up in July, August and September and we're still at it."

December 23, for example, is one of the most popular days with seven marriages.

"That is a corona effect," said Beck.

Some couples who had postponed their wedding in the spring would have chosen the date.

Only on February 20, 2020, with nine weddings, there were two more.

So far this year, 822 children have been born in the Neubrandenburg Clinic, 470 of them boys.

That was a total of about 260 births less than in 2019. The most popular children's first names in 2020 were Emma, followed by Mia and Leni for girls.

Theo was most common among boys, ahead of Finn and Karl.

The registrars classified Ruby and Amara as "unusual first names" for girls and Iwo and Dragan for boys.

Beck has rejected parts of a requested renaming of a family: A man wanted to rename himself "Graf zu ...".

"We preferred to leave out the 'Graf zu' in our agreement," said Beck.
