Mainz (dpa / lrs) - Around a week before the expected start of the first corona vaccinations in Rhineland-Palatinate, the planning is in full swing.

There is no detailed schedule for the kick-off yet, much is still in full swing.

“The vaccination will start nationwide on December 27th.

We have not yet received any information from Biontech as to when exactly the first vaccine deliveries will arrive in Rhineland-Palatinate, ”said Health Minister Sabine Bätzing-Lichtenthäler (SPD) of the German Press Agency.

The vaccine will be brought by the Mainz pharmaceutical company to the central delivery point in the country and then transported from there to the individual vaccination centers.

According to the minister, the mobile teams pick up the number of cans they need for that day and then drive to the nursing homes.

The preparation is then processed and administered in the facilities.

"How many doses of vaccine Rhineland-Palatinate gets with the first batch of deliveries is unfortunately not yet known," said Bätzing-Lichtenthäler.

“The only thing that is clear is that it will not be enough to fully meet the prioritization that is given at the beginning.

But that comes gradually. "

However, the country can always assume that, according to the population key, it will receive around 4.8 percent of the vaccine doses that the federal government receives.

"We will now start where the vaccinations are urgently needed, namely in the old people's and nursing homes," she said.

Among these institutions, there will be a further prioritization at the beginning due to the initial shortage of the vaccine.

"Then there will be more and more new vaccines - later also from Moderna, and then the situation will gradually relax a little," she added.

Preparations for the vaccinations have already started in the nursing homes.

“We wrote to the homes this week and sent them information sheets so that they could use the time until December 27th to educate and inform their residents.

And so that they can obtain the consent of the supervisor for people who are under legal care, ”explained the minister.

The staff in the facilities will then also be vaccinated.

"We have to use the time, because we still have the Christmas holidays in between," she emphasized.

"One must not forget: there is far too little vaccine available at the beginning so that vaccinations can be given in all nursing homes in Rhineland-Palatinate right at the beginning."
