Hanover (dpa / lni) - The Medical Association has appealed to the Lower Saxony state government to sharpen the Corona regulation in matters of fireworks.

"It should be banned as strictly as possible, it is about avoidable overloading of the health system," said Martina Wenker, President of the Medical Association, on Saturday of the German Press Agency.

She noted with great concern the judgment of the Higher Administrative Court (OVG) in Lüneburg that the fireworks ban in the Lower Saxony ordinance had overturned.

Such a comprehensive ban is not necessary as an infection protection measure, the judges ruled.

From a medical point of view, she did not understand the judgment, stressed Wenker.

"On the one hand, the currently increasing number of infections and the number of people seriously ill with Covid-19 prohibit any gathering of people who are drunk on New Year's Eve," she said.

In years of practical experience at the turn of the year, she also observed the most serious injuries, especially on children.

"We are not yet at the limit in Lower Saxony, and we should do everything to ensure that it stays that way."

The release of fireworks would counteract all strict measures of the contact restrictions and the hoped-for positive effects of the current lockdown in one fell swoop.

The sale of firecrackers and rockets is prohibited across Germany before New Year's Eve this year due to the pandemic.

At the request of the federal government, the Federal Council decided on Friday to amend the Explosives Ordinance accordingly.

The Lower Saxony Ministry of Health also pointed this out in a reaction to the OVG decision.

In addition, it will be checked whether a new version of Paragraph 10a of the State Ordinance, taking into account the reasoning of the OVG Lüneburg, can achieve legally secure bans.

The decision of the OVG to lift the ban on firecrackers is incontestable.

However, the country has the opportunity to make improvements.

Other federal states do not have such extensive fireworks bans.

It would be conceivable, for example, to ban the burning of fireworks in certain places, said the OVG.
