Hanover (dpa / lni) - Christmas week begins cloudy, rainy and mild, but for some Lower Saxony there is hope for snow on Christmas Eve.

On Monday afternoon, with maximum temperatures between seven and nine degrees, rain poured into the country from the west, as a spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Sunday.

The rain spreads in the night to Tuesday and during the day to southern Lower Saxony.

The maximum values on Tuesday are between nine degrees on the North Sea coast and eleven degrees in Göttingen.

The DWD expects the weather to change on Thursday. During the day, wind from the north brings colder air into the country and lowers the snow line. At high altitudes in the Upper Harz, people have a good chance of a white Christmas. The temperatures drop to five to six on the Elbe and eight degrees in the Göttingen area. In the night of Friday it cools down further, so that there can be widespread frost.
