Wermelskirchen (dpa / lnwe) - A drunk driver caused a whole series of accidents on Sunday night in Wermelskirchen in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis and caused considerable property damage.

The 28-year-old from Wermelskirchen initially hit two garbage cans parked on the edge of the road with his car when turning around 10:15 p.m.

He then damaged the rear of a car parked next to it and then collided with another car, which he in turn pushed onto a third vehicle, the district police authority reported on Sunday.

According to the police, the 28-year-old then escaped from the accident site in his car and drove to the site of a nearby gas station. His escape only ended when he hit a gas pump there. The gas station attendant then alerted the police. According to the authorities, a breath alcohol test carried out on site produced a result of almost two per thousand. The Wermelskirchener's license was secured. The police put the damage to property at more than 10,000 euros.
