Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's AfD state chief Martin Reichardt leads his state party in the federal election campaign.

The 51-year-old prevailed in the election for the top spot on Sunday at a party congress in Magdeburg against the state parliament member Robert Farle and the AfD member Rene Vollmann.

Reichardt received 229 of the 348 votes cast, which corresponds to an approval of 65 percent.

23 percent of those present voted for Farle.

The 70-year-old had said in his application speech that he knew that he had no chance of winning, but wanted to warn against a split in the party.

He criticized that there had been meetings in back rooms to determine the candidate lists for the state and federal elections in advance and also complained that a party congress on the 4th Advent prevented many members from participating.

He wanted the party to remain free and alive.

Farle actually wants to join the Bundestag, but was not considered in the election proposals that were announced in advance.

Country chief Reichardt referred in his speech to his previous work in the Bundestag.

He spoke of the fact that the “political establishment” had shown its undemocratic grimace several times.

The AfD is the only party that makes constructive policy.

The native of Lower Saxony has been sitting in the Bundestag for the AfD since 2017.

At the end of September 2021 there will be elections again, and Saxony-Anhalt will elect a new state parliament three and a half months beforehand.
