Suva / Sydney (dpa) - The cyclone "Yasa" has left a trail of devastation on the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific.

The authorities reported four dead by Sunday.

On Saturday, the bodies of two men, 50 and 70 years old, were found dead under the rubble of a house.

A 45-year-old farmer and a three-month-old baby had previously been found dead.

The cyclone is one of the strongest ever measured in the Pacific.

It swept on Friday with gusts of wind up to 345 kilometers per hour over the archipelago.

Thousands of people were left homeless or had to flee to emergency shelters.

The northern island of Vanua Levu was hardest hit.

Aid transports reached the island on Sunday.

Australia and New Zealand flew in relief supplies, including tents, tarpaulins and tablets for water purification.

The Republic of Fiji consists of more than 300 islands and is located around 2,700 kilometers northeast of the Australian city of Brisbane and 2,200 kilometers north of Auckland in New Zealand.

The capital Suva is located at the 18th parallel south of the country and is therefore in a tropical zone, which is also often hit by cyclones in the northern hemisphere.

Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama recalled that Cyclone Evan hit Fiji at the same time in December 2012.

Since then they have been badly battered by twelve other cyclones.

"That's not normal.

This is a climate emergency, ”wrote Bainimarama on Twitter.
