Ahrenshoop / Beeskow (dpa) - The police in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania paid tribute to a beach visitor from Brandenburg who helped to save two children from the Baltic Sea in the summer.

A girl and a boy, both ten years old, got caught in dangerous currents on July 1 in Ahrenshoop (Western Pomerania-Rügen) near a stone wall and could not free themselves, as a police spokeswoman said on Sunday.

The 31-year-old from a small town in the Oder-Spree district immediately recognized the emergency and rushed to help the children together with the 32-year-old father.

Both managed to have the children saved.

In the end, however, her father was caught in the strong Baltic current on the western beach of the Fischland-Darß peninsula and could only be recovered dead.

The children came to a clinic, but were able to leave it shortly afterwards.

The Brandenburg citizen received a commemorative medal made of fine silver and a personal letter of thanks from District Administrator Stefan Kerth (SPD).

The spokeswoman said this was sent to him by post because of the corona crisis.
