Val d'Isère (dpa) - “It was a cool day” for ski racer Kira Weidle.

Germany's best speed specialist just missed the podium on the second descent this winter in Val d'Isère.

As fifth, the Starnberg woman celebrated her best World Cup result since third place on the downhill run in Garmisch in January 2019 and her fourth best ever.

Weidle was “very satisfied” with her “significant increase” compared to the race on Friday, when she finished eleventh under the impression of her two training crashes.

On Saturday she acted with renewed courage.

"The self-confidence is back," said the 24-year-old.

She is also doing better physically.

"Respect and hats off," said women's national coach Jürgen Graller with a view to Weidle's promising start to the season for the German press agency.

Weidle did not allow himself to be put off by the early start number two, which was “not an advantage in the conditions in the upper area”, nor by its slight wounds.

Fifth place is “really cool” and the native of Stuttgart has “definitely what it takes” to make it onto the podium this winter.

In Val d'Isère, the podium places on Saturday were shared among the same athletes who were ahead on Friday.

Olympic champion Sofia Goggia from Italy was the fastest this time.

Second was the best downhill skier last winter and the previous day's winner Corinne Suter from Switzerland (+0.24 seconds).

American Breezy Johnson (+0.27) came third again.

After several falls on the descent on Friday, the track was slightly defused.

There were therefore no further serious falls.

Weidle also benefited from the new goal setting.

"Today I could concentrate more on skiing and not on whether I finish the run or not," she told ARD.

At the Super-G on Sunday (11.30 a.m.), she hopes it will “continue like this”.
