Wuppertal (dpa / lnw) - A Christmas Eve church service planned for a Wuppertal cemetery with the President of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland, Manfred Rekowski, has been canceled.

In view of the current Corona situation, the community has decided to replace all planned face-to-face services with digital offers, for example, the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland announced on Saturday.

In the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia there are hardly any Protestant attendance services.

The Evangelical Church in Westphalia and the Lippe Regional Church had already de facto canceled all real Christmas services.

The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland has not yet advised against attendance at worship services.

President Rekowski had said in a letter published on Wednesday that the question would have to be decided by the local authorities according to the local situation.

In fact, a “clear majority” has now canceled the respective attendance services, said a spokesman for the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland of the dpa.

In the Catholic Church, attendance at church services has not yet been advised against.

The responsibility for this lies with the individual dioceses.
