Even this year there are certain certainties that cannot be mixed up.

Luckily.

So it's Christmas time, despite all the closed Christmas markets and all the difficulties of seeing family and friends.

And already 2021 is announced, combined with the hope of the end of the pandemic and a new, old, good life.

A good time to take stock.

The first thing that comes to mind is our columnist Joshua Wong.

I believe he was the victim of an unfair trial and is in jail in Hong Kong.

The powerful in Beijing are probably happy that his voice can no longer be heard quite as loud.

Not only columnists but also journalists are threatened.

According to the International Union of Journalists (IFJ), 42 journalists were violently killed in the course of their work this year, most of them in Mexico.

That is bitter.

But it is a small ray of hope that fewer journalists were murdered in 2020 than they have been in 20 years.

Unfortunately, another trend continues this year.

235 journalists are in jail.

The latest example: A few days ago the Chinese arrested Haze Fan, a Bloomberg employee in Beijing.

It is said to have threatened "national security".

At the top of the prison statistics is a state that some years ago wanted to join the European Union.

67 journalists are behind bars in Turkey.

At Christmas I will think of the murdered and imprisoned colleagues.
