The Deutsche Bahn AG expects a significantly higher train load in long-distance passenger traffic than in the Pademie over the holidays.

"We are currently assuming an average occupancy rate of 35 to 40 percent for Christmas travel," says a rail forecast from WELT AM SONNTAG.

“At its peak”, the capacity utilization on individual route sections “is around 60 percent”.

If the occupancy rate was 60 percent, it would no longer be guaranteed that there would always be only one person in double seats, for example in ICE trains.

Exact predictions cannot be made because there is no reservation requirement on DB long-distance trains despite the corona pandemic.

This means that travelers with a Flex ticket or a Bahncard 100 can look for free seats at short notice.

According to Deutsche Bahn information, around 70 percent of those who bought a ticket for this period have booked a fixed seat reservation for trains on the holidays.

In order to guarantee the minimum distances, the railway has long since reduced the number of spaces that can be reserved.

However, if numerous passengers board a train without a reservation, the distances between the individual people could become very small.

At Christmas, DB will deploy around 100 special trains, primarily on the main tourist routes.

In general, the number of all bookings in rail travel for the whole of December 2020 has been around 70 percent below the volume of the same month last year.
