18 December 2020The Catania prosecutor has asked for the indictment of almost all the suspects in the second section of the "University banned" investigation (which involved 54 people), after having removed the positions of some for which filing will be requested.

Among these was the former rector of Sapienza Eugenio Gaudio.

It was learned - writes Ansa - at the opening of the preliminary hearing in progress, relating to a first line of investigations, for the request for indictment of eight professors and two former rectors of the university on alleged rigged competitions .

The investigation of the Prosecutor's Office is based on investigations by the Digos of the Police Headquarters.

Among the defendants for whom the preliminary hearing is already underway there are two former rectors, professors Francesco Basile and Giacomo Pignataro accused of being, respectively, "the boss" and "the promoter".

All 10 are challenged for criminal association, disturbed freedom of choice of the contractor, abuse of office, undue inducement to promise or give benefits, corruption for acts contrary to one's duties and ideological and material falsehood.

Crimes that according to the Prosecutor's Office were committed to "guarantee the appointment as teachers, researchers, doctoral students and administrative staff of subjects previously identified by the same associates".

The other teachers - continues Ansa - for whom the preliminary hearing for the request for indictment is underway are Giuseppe Barone, Michele Maria Bernadetta Cavallaro, Filippo Drago, Giovanni Gallo, Carmelo Giovanni Monaco, Roberto Pennisi, Giuseppe Sessa and Giancarlo Magnano San Lio.

The position of the latter has been removed today because he requested, and obtained, to have access to the abbreviated procedure.

The preliminary hearing has been adjourned to next 11 January.
