Erfurt (dpa / th) - Teachers for high schools, regular schools and elementary schools will receive the same salary in Thuringia from August.

The Thuringian State Parliament decided on Friday in Erfurt to pay higher salaries for primary school teachers from August 2021.

So far they have been grouped as civil servants in grade 12, while high school and regular school teachers have already been paid in the A13.

In the future, all will be in grade A13, in which the gross salary will be between around 4,300 and 5,500 euros per month, depending on professional experience.

The AfD parliamentary group voted against the higher pay.

With the increase in the salary for elementary school teachers, the job should become more attractive.

Thuringia has suffered from an acute teacher shortage for years.

Some education politicians also hope that with the better salary prospects, more primary school teachers from other federal states will come to Thuringia.

Elementary school teachers have been viewed as “little teachers” for far too long, although they laid the foundations for a good education, said the Greens parliamentary group leader Astrid Rothe-Beinlich.

The education policy spokesman for the left-wing parliamentary group, Torsten Wolf, spoke of a “justice gap” with the other teaching posts that will now be closed.

With a new system of allowances, which the state parliament also decided on Friday, among other things prospective teachers should be motivated to teach in areas where the teacher shortage is particularly severe.

Even if teachers take on special tasks at their school, they should receive allowances.
