Berlin (dpa) - Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters has encouraged the Berlinale to stick to the film festival in the coming year in a different form.

“The Berlinale has been thrilling hundreds of thousands of film enthusiasts in Berlin and around the world for 70 years.

That's why we don't want to sacrifice it to Corona, but have explored the chances of showing new films in 2021 and reaching our large, enthusiastic audience, "said the CDU politician of the dpa in Berlin.

Grütters sees “a strong cultural and film political signal” in the alternative planning of the Berlinale.

A competition gives many filmmakers international hope for their work to be recognized.

The European Film Market will give the film industry a tailwind in spring.

"And in summer the festival experience is celebrated with an audience on the big screen," said Grütters.

"The Berlinale brand will also show its charisma in 2021."

She promised the Berlinale additional financial support from the Corona aid program for culture "to protect it in difficult times".

She is very confident that the new concept will also convince sponsors to get involved again for culture and at the Berlinale 2021, said Grütters.

The Berlinale announced on Friday that the festival would not take place in February of next year as planned.

Instead, there will be a digital industry get-together in March, and a festival with an audience is planned for June.
