Chichester (AP) - British veteran Michael Stanley (80) collected almost 34,000 pounds (37,500 euros) in donations for charity in a self-made boat made of sheet metal.

"Major Mick" completed the challenge of more than 100 miles (160.9 kilometers) on Friday with his "Tintanic", as he had named the rowboat.

"Tin" means "sheet metal" in English.

His ten-year-old grandson Toby received him with a serenade on the trumpet.

Stanley rowed twice a week for three months on the Chichester Canal in southern England at two miles an hour (3.2 km / h).

During that time he celebrated both his 80th birthday and his 50th wedding anniversary.

"I am very satisfied that I did it, but I will miss the chatter, laughter and joking with the people on the path," said "Major Mick" of the PA agency.

"But I will not miss the wet and cold weather."

On his 105 mile journey, he estimated that he made 105,000 oar strokes.

"That's pretty strong."

The "Tintanic" is now to be auctioned and the proceeds will benefit a hospice in addition to the donations.
