Himmelstadt (dpa / lby) - The hardworking helpers of the Christ Child in Bavaria's only Christmas post office have answered more than 70,000 letters so far.

"More letters have arrived, but addresses are often missing or incomplete," said Rosemarie Schotte, the honorary director of the post office in Himmelstadt.

The last tons of letters arrived on Friday before the branch closes for this year.

The approximately 35 volunteers want to answer all the letters before Christmas Eve.

Last year around 65,000 letters and wish lists arrived by the end of December.

"We have had around 80,000 letters for years," said Schotte.

The corona pandemic was the topic this year.

"The children are sad because they are not allowed to meet playmates or see grandparents," said Schotte.

«Corona is stupid!

Can't you get rid of Corona? », Such and similar formulations were read more often.

Since the Christ Child and his helpers also had to follow the Corona hygiene rules, the gates remained closed to visitors this year.

The Christmas post office has existed in the small village in the Main-Spessart district since 1986 - at that time around 3,500 letters were received every year.

Letters are now being sent to Himmelstadt from all over the world.

A particularly large number came from Taiwan this year.

The branch does not know exactly why so many letters have arrived from the Asian island nation.

"We suspect that some are happy about a German postage stamp," said Schotte.

She has been helping in Bavaria's only Christmas post office since 1993.

This year too, many letters from the children touched her heart.

"I am most affected when children are sick themselves."
