Mainz (dpa / lrs) - FSV Mainz 05, threatened with relegation, is hoping for two successful games before the winter break in difficult times.
"We want to end the year successfully," said sports director Rouven Schröder on Thursday with a view to the last Bundesliga game 2020 on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) against Werder Bremen and the DFB Cup match on Wednesday (8:45 p.m.) against the second division club VfL Bochum.
At best, the Mainz soccer professionals can slide past Arminia Bielefeld to relegation place 16 and approach the current 15th 1. FC Köln to one point.
The minimum requirement for this is a home win against Bremen - which would then be only two points away.
The defensive performance in the latest 0-0 at Hertha BSC makes those responsible confident.
"But we have to decide the games in the box," said coach Jan-Moritz Lichte at a press conference on Thursday.
"In order to get the necessary security, we will do a few more things during training."
