• Russia Russian spies expert in toxins followed Alexei Navalny during the trip in which he was poisoned

  • Russia The EU will sanction six people and one entity for the poisoning of the Russian opponent Navalny

The Kremlin's silence in recent days has failed to prevent the poisoning of Russian opponent Alexei Navalny from being the star topic of Vladimir Putin's annual press conference, who admitted for the first time that his agents are monitoring the notorious dissident.

When asked about the latest revelations about the case, the Russian president referred to Navalny as "the patient of the Berlin clinic" and accused him of having the support of the US special services.

"And if this is so, then it is interesting, and the special services, of course, have to monitor him. But this does not at all mean that it is necessary to poison him."

The Russian leader said there has never been a need for Russian special services to kill him: "What for? If they wanted [to poison] him, they would have carried it out to the end."

The Russian secret services are in the spotlight

after the Bellingcat research portal revealed that Russian FSB agents followed Navalny on all his trips since 2017. They were agents trained in chemical weapons and medicine who were also close to the opponent in the days and hours prior to poisoning.

The investigation is based on the comparison of airline tickets and the geolocation of the alleged Russian agents thanks to their mobiles.

The president commented that his spokesman, Dimitri Peskov, "told me yesterday about the latest developments in this regard, about information from our special services."

For Putin the revelations of the Bellingcat portal "

are not an investigation, it is a laundering of the material of the American special services

. Our security services know it and use the telephones where they consider it convenient."

The president has avoided going to the bottom of the investigation, which presents the Russian state as the author of the poisoning with Novichok in August, and has complained about the bad treatment that he receives from abroad: "There has always been this news, it

is a war informative

. it was the same with the data on the war in the Caucasus, I remember how we showed foreign media ,

"he said, referring to the war in Chechnya.

"I have to do what is appropriate for the country, not to look good abroad," concluded the president, who was also asked about other investigations that affect his daughter.

Putin even recalled that when Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, "asked me to take him to Germany for treatment, I instantly authorized it."

The Russian president believes that the so-called 'Navalny case', which has not yet led to the opening of a criminal investigation in Russia, "is a trick to attack the authorities" and so that the opponent can present himself as "a person of the same caliber , like someone on a national scale. "

"You should not use these tricks, but development programs for the country, and I want to promote a positive agenda," he added.

Putin made the remarks during his grand annual press conference with the Russian president.

This year he appeared from his presidential residence in Novo Ogariovo, on the outskirts of Moscow.
