Berlin (dpa / bb) - Despite some turbulence in recent weeks, the Eisbären Berlin are confidently entering the new season of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).

"As every year, the polar bears want to reach the playoffs," said sports director Stéphane Richer in a video press conference on Thursday.

"And like all teams that reach the playoffs, we want to play for the championship."

The preparation of the capital city team for the opening game, which they will contest on Friday evening (7.30 p.m. / Magentasport) against the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven in the arena at Ostbahnhof, ultimately went far from optimal.

In the DEL test tournament, the polar bears had lost all four games before they had to quarantine at home almost two weeks ago due to corona cases in the team.

In the past few days, therefore, only a few training units with a changing line-up were possible.

Richer expects that such pandemic-related problems will shape the coming season.

“We have learned that we have to reckon with postponements and cancellations at short notice.

The whole league has to be prepared for this, ”said the 54-year-old Canadian.

«We have to be one thing above all this season: flexible.

This year nothing will be as we know it - the Magentasport Cup has already shown that. "
