Magdeburg (dpa / sa) - They are currently showing maximum performance to cope with the flood of parcels in lockdown and before Christmas: According to a comparison of the Barmer, parcel deliverers and postmen belong to the occupational groups with the highest failure rates in addition to nursing staff.

Postmen, parcel deliverers and courier drivers were absent for 29 days per year, seven more days than the Saxon hitchhikers with an average of 22.1 days.

This emerges from the current Barmer Health Report 2019.

The data was based on diagnostic data from 3.8 million employed insured persons, 110,000 of whom lived in Saxony-Anhalt.

In addition to parcel deliverers and postmen, employees in nursing homes were often absent after 30.4 days, but also employees in public administration with 29.6 days or in retail with 24.9 days.

According to a survey by the health insurance company, software developers are the least ill with 13.7 days of sick leave, while research workers are absent for 14.7 days per year.

"The fact that the absenteeism of the postal, courier and express services exceeds the already very high average of sick days in the country by another 31 percent is alarming," said Barmer country manager Axel Wiedemann.

"The more than 9,000 employees at post, courier and express services in Saxony-Anhalt do a tough job."

A particularly large number of days absent from delivery workers fell in January, February and December.

And Wiedemann has a tip ready: "In order to relieve the parcel driver, you could perhaps take a few steps towards the next delivery, coordinate storage locations - and thank you with a smile or a little attention."

The parcel industry is recording unusually high volume growth this year, and according to an industry estimate, the Christmas business this year is likely to be 20 percent higher than in 2019. The reason is the pandemic - many people prefer to shop online rather than in stores.

The logisticians are working on the stop, although additional staff has been hired.
