Aachen (dpa / lnw) - The carol singers are not coming to the front doors this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We recommend the carol-singing groups in the current situation to refrain from visiting the people at the front doors," said Pastor Dirk Bingener, the president of the children's mission organization "Die Sternsinger", on Wednesday in Aachen.

Instead, there should be contactless star singing with alternative actions.

These could be blessing letters or digital visits.

Throughout Germany, boys and girls take part in the Catholic custom in around 10,000 parishes.

The 63rd Dreikönigssingen campaign is due to open in Aachen Cathedral at the end of December.

It is to be extended until February 2, 2021.

Traditionally, carol singers go from door to door to bring blessings.

You leave the blessing C + M + B on the front doors.

This stands for the Latin phrase "Christ mansionem benedicat" (Christ bless this house).

At the same time, they raise money for a good cause.

At the beginning of 2020, the children disguised as kings had raised 52.4 million euros.
