The Left Party politician Gregor Gysi didn't like what an international research network to which Bellingcat, the “Spiegel”, CNN and “The Insider” belong, found out about the attempted poisoning of the Russian opposition politician Alexej Navalny.

The researchers have identified several agents of the Russian secret service FSB who are said to have been involved in the attempted murder, and thus further burdened the Putin regime.

What Gysi acknowledges with a long, Russia-apologetic tirade on Facebook, which culminates in the cynical accusation against the federal government of not having complied with Moscow's “request for legal assistance”.

"Of course it could have been as the mirror assumes," writes Gysi.

“But it could also have been different.” Sure, of course everything can always be completely different.

But you have to ignore a lot of things in order not to come to the conclusion that Moscow was the author of the poison attack: Western intelligence, for example, the long list of precedents of Russian contract killings with poison as well as those of opponents of the Putin regime and common sense to name a few.

After all, the neurotoxin Novichok was developed by Moscow and is not just available around the corner.

It is one of the mysteries of German politics that the Left Party continues to listen to Moscow as it was during the SED, although communism there has long been replaced by a kleptocracy that is more right-wing than left.

Putin supports right-wing populist parties in Europe, for example in France and Italy, spreads anti-gay propaganda about the allegedly effeminate West, has allied himself with the Orthodox Church in Russia and promotes corona myths in Europe, which are particularly appreciated by the far right.

No wonder then that the AfD likes to present itself as the fifth column of Moscow with compliant visits to the Kremlin.

The Left Party does not seem to be bothered by its proximity to the AfD in this case.

When in doubt, the common rejection of liberal values connects.

After all, the Left Party defended and glossed over any dictatorship or autocracy from Venezuela to Cuba to Russia, if only it was anti-Western enough.

Your foreign policy is above all an expression of Western self-hatred, which always wants to recognize the bad in our democracies and tries to wash away opponents of the free world.
