Dresden (dpa / sn) - Saxony's Minister of Health Petra Köpping (SPD) drew a parallel in the state parliament between high corona infection numbers in the Free State and the AfD election results.

"We have to ask ourselves why are we different from other federal states?" Said Köpping on Wednesday in Dresden.

It is noticeable that there are also high numbers of infected people in the regions with high election results for the AfD.

Köpping spoke of "facts".

In the 2017 federal election, for example, the AfD in the Bautzen district - the region with the currently highest incidence value (631) in the Free State - was the strongest party and won almost 33 percent of the vote there.

The AfD also got the most votes in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district.

It became the second strongest force in the Erzgebirgskreis and the Zwickau district.

These regions are considered Corona hotspots in the Free State.

Recently, the SPD Eastern Representative, Martin Dulig, also attributed joint responsibility to the AfD for the current development of the corona pandemic.

The party has "developed into the parliamentary arm of those who refuse to wear masks," he told the political magazine "Cicero".
