US chief expert on infectious disease control Anthony Fauci said on Tuesday that President-elect Joe Biden and elected Vice President Kamala Harris should be vaccinated against COVID-19 as soon as possible.

"For security reasons, I feel very strongly that we have to make them get the vaccination as soon as possible," Fauchi said in an interview with the American ABC network.

Fauci also urged President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to get vaccinated.

"You still want now to protect people who are very important to our country at the moment," he added.

The first doses of the vaccine against the Covid-19 disease caused by the emerging corona virus were given yesterday, Monday in the United States, and efforts continued today, Tuesday, as health care workers in New Jersey were vaccinated.

The first round of vaccinations with the Coronavirus vaccine produced by Pfizer and Biontec was a vaccine, in what could be the largest vaccination program in the history of the United States.

Today, Tuesday, the US Food and Drug Administration released data showing that a similar vaccine produced by Moderna has a great effect in preventing severe cases of Covid-19 disease.

An independent advisory board meets later this week to vote on whether to recommend licensing Moderna's vaccine or not.

And officials from the US Department of Defense, which is helping to coordinate the vaccination campaign, said that if Moderna was approved, 6 million doses could be shipped by next week.
