The Police have completed a major coup against the money laundering structures linked to the Russian mafias.

As reported in an official note, they have arrested 23 allegedly involved in this network that, allegedly, was engaged in laundering money from Russian bosses.

According to the Police, the organization planned to control key sectors of the Spanish economy and infiltrate State Institutions, counting on lawyers, officials, politicians, businessmen and computer hackers.

The investigation began in 2013 when the agents detected that the Russian mafia had intensified its activities in Spain, using it as an entry point for the money laundering of criminal organizations from the former Soviet Union, investing the money from its different criminal activities around the world in business in our country, mainly in discos, restaurants and the real estate sector of the Spanish coast.

Likewise, they made use of the enormous economic amounts that they introduced into our country to corrupt and infiltrate public institutions.

Specifically, the investigators detected several criminal leaders of Russian origin who continuously frequented areas of Alicante and Ibiza and who, through front men, maintained a constant and systematic activity of investment of foreign capital in our country, with operations that revealed a illegality in origin.

In this sense, they carried out banking operations by transferring funds whose origins were not sufficiently justified, involving the cash transport of large amounts of money through the national territory to and from abroad, as well as using shell companies and front men.

These organizations, whose criminal activities include murder, extortion, drug trafficking, arms, human trafficking and corporate raids, have multiple branches throughout Europe, also extending their activity to South America and the USA.

The profits of these criminal activities were invested in Spain in various businesses, mainly in leisure, the hotel and real estate sector, through Russian businessmen linked to both the Thieves in Law and the Russian Crime Syndicates.

The now dismantled plot committed, in addition to money laundering, a plurality of related crimes that was deeply rooted in Spanish society.

To do this, he used part of the money that they brought into our country to try to corrupt officials and politicians in strategic sectors.

Those investigated had deployed a powerful client network within the Spanish Administration, achieving a perfect infiltration in the institutions of our country to carry out their business with impunity, resorting to bribery and influence peddling, both to facilitate their money laundering operations by circumventing legal obstacles and achieving a series of administrative favors, such as to protect themselves from police and judicial investigations, also facilitating the acquisition of the Spanish residence to all customers of the dismantled network.

One of the main investigated carried out philanthropic activities in various public institutions in order to be able to approach them and, once their trust was obtained, to be able to make use of them for the benefit of the criminal network.

Due to its infiltration capacity, the organization had managed to penetrate various public institutions.

Thus, while some went unnoticed to act in the shadows, others were active in politics and the public sphere, maintaining close and fluid contact with representatives of the public administration of different profiles whom they tried to attract for their network of influences.
