Berlin (dpa) - The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) are initially taking 20 vehicles from the Saxon Bombardier plants in Görlitz and Bautzen from the new major order for trams.

The manufacturer announced on Wednesday.

A total of 117 new trains could come to Berlin from the end of 2022, as the BVG announced on Tuesday.

According to Bombardier, the total order value is up to 571 million euros.

To this end, the Flexity type, which is already on the road in Berlin, is being further developed - recognizable by the unusually round front section.

Bombardier Transportation announced that the new vehicles will run more quietly and more efficiently through the streets.

In addition, more timetable compliance is possible because passengers can get on and off faster over low thresholds.

The major order is good news for the Bombardier locations in Saxony.

Saving rounds and the planned takeover of the Bombardier train division by the French provider Alstom had unsettled the employees there.

The purchase agreement was signed in September and the merger is expected to be completed in early 2021.

Next year the last trains of the previous Flexity tram will be delivered to Berlin, a total of 231. Then the first order from the new framework contract will follow.

The first 20 vehicles, including the supply of spare parts, have an order value of 115 million euros for 32 years, as Bombardier announced.

With a length of up to 50 meters, the new trams are ten meters longer than the previous ones.

With the new acquisition, the BVG wants to replace trains that were acquired in the 1990s.

The car bodies are built in Görlitz, the final assembly takes place in Bautzen.
