Halle (dpa / sa) - In order to protect against the corona virus and out of concern about a high rush during the holidays, the Bergzoo Halle temporarily closes for visitors.

In this way, employees are to be protected and the animals can be looked after, as the zoo announced on Wednesday.

A possibly ordered quarantine in the area of the zoo would have a dramatic impact on the care of the zoo animals.

In addition, the zoo is assuming its social responsibility with the closure, it said.

According to Saxony-Anhalt's containment ordinance, zoos, animal parks and botanical gardens are also allowed to open during the lockdown.

Since many other leisure facilities remain closed, many visitors would have been expected over the holidays, according to the mountain zoo.

Compliance with the safety distances, for example in front of animal facilities or the cash registers, would have been difficult to enforce.

"Under these conditions, those responsible no longer saw themselves in a position to ensure a safe visit to the zoo," it said.

The closure is initially planned until January 10, 2021.
