The decision on extended beach protection means that the same rules now apply to Strängnäs as to other Mälaren municipalities.

Long story

The background is a long story.

The decision was originally made as early as 2013 - but has since been appealed in various instances.

The case was referred back by the government to the county administrative board in Sörmland in 2018. Since then, it has been handled again and reworked.

Basically, the governor has now made the same decision as before: 300 meters of beach protection at Lake Mälaren.

But in the new decision, some exceptions have been made.

Enclave

- We have sought to reduce the owners' need to appeal by making special solutions with enclaves within the 300-meter zone around the houses and plots to which most consultation views apply.

In addition, the maps are more easily accessible now, which we also believe increases the understanding of how the boundaries have been made on properties, says environmental protection director Anne-Li Fiskesjö.

According to her, appeals can never be ruled out, partly because some consultative bodies are negative about beach protection at all.

The purpose of the extended beach protection is to secure the public's access to beach areas and preserve good conditions for plants and animals.
