Frankfurt / Main (dpa) - Lufthansa pilots have not yet given up hope of being able to avoid corona-related mass layoffs with comprehensive part-time models.

The company Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) in Frankfurt announced that proposals would be made to the company this Tuesday.

Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr had previously complained in interviews that no long-term restructuring contract for savings had been concluded with the pilots of the core company during the Corona crisis.

In the absence of an agreement, around 500 captains and 500 first officers would have to leave the company in the first quarter of 2021.

That would be around 20 percent of the team.

The CEO said literally: "Innovative part-time models for the next few years should be possible in order to compensate for the undoubtedly existing staff surplus with as few layoffs as possible."

We are pleased about this offer from Spohr, explained the VC board member Marcel Gröls.

"Lufthansa has so far shown itself to be closed to the treatment of socially acceptable job cuts through part-time work, special leave or early retirement."

Since September there have been 16 rounds of negotiations, in which the VC made five offers to the company to save on personnel costs.

In addition to the volume, the duration of the dismissal protection is still controversial.

Lufthansa has already made restructuring agreements with the other professional groups in the company.

In parallel to the negotiations with the VC, there are also talks with the Lufthansa works council about the social plan and the reconciliation of interests that are required in the event of layoffs.

Lufthansa, which was rescued by the state, made a loss of 5.6 billion euros in the first nine months of the year and cut its flight offer due to the extensive travel restrictions.
