Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs Ramona Pop (Greens) has described the multi-week lockdown to contain the corona pandemic from Wednesday as an “inevitable measure”.

After stabilizing at a high level in the meantime, there is an increase in the number of infections and more deaths, said Pop on Tuesday after the Senate meeting.

Hospitals and intensive care units are increasingly burdened, many employees here "at the end of their tether."

On Wednesday, public life in Berlin will be largely shut down - initially limited to January 10th.

Many shops and schools are closing, and day-care centers are also closing down
