“Russia continues to threaten the stability of the Mediterranean by using various methods to spread misinformation, undermine national sovereignty and wreak havoc, conflict and division in states across the region,” Pompeo said.

Among the "threats to stability" in the Mediterranean emanating from Russia, the head of the State Department called support for the government of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Pompeo, in a statement, recalled the incident with the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Greece in 2018, and also pointed out that "wealthy Russians, many of whom are associated with the Kremlin, laundered billions of dollars through the Republic of Cyprus and Malta."

He also added that "in Libya, Russia supported the storming of the Libyan capital Tripoli."

Earlier, The Hill wrote that the American congressmen intend to strengthen the US position in the Mediterranean region to confront Turkey and Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that it is necessary for the American leadership to continue to avoid "adventures" in the Middle East that threaten the entire region.
