“Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in a speech at the Mediterranean Dialogue, accused the United States of playing political games in the Mediterranean and of delaying the appointment of the Secretary General's special envoy to Libya.

It is regrettable and counterproductive that Mr Lavrov again misunderstands the facts and tries to rewrite history, ”Pompeo said in a statement.

He noted that the United States "is actively working with allies and partners in the Eastern Mediterranean to promote greater stability, security and prosperity."

According to the American diplomat, the United States continues to pursue the goal of the parties in Libya working out a political solution through the Libyan Political Dialogue forum through negotiations and with the assistance of the UN.

In addition, Pompeo said that Russia threatens stability in the Mediterranean and contributes to the outbreak of conflicts.

Lavrov previously stated that in the south of the region there are problems of a terrorist threat, a difficult humanitarian situation, human rights violations, which is "an unacceptable price for the irresponsible geopolitical games of Washington and its European allies," RIA Novosti said.

The Russian minister also noted that the American side is delaying the decision on the special envoy in Libya.

In addition, the Russian Foreign Minister stated that it is necessary for the United States to continue to avoid "adventures" in the Middle East, which threaten the entire region.
