Munich / Cologne (dpa) - The Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx has described the non-publication of an opinion on the sexual abuse of children and young people of the Archdiocese of Cologne as "devastating for us all".

The Cologne Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki had commissioned the report from a Munich law firm - but after completion decided not to publish it.

When asked how he assessed this, Marx told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Tuesday): “The public now perceives that lawyers are arguing about quibbles on the back of those affected.

It is devastating for all of us. "

He had also commissioned an expert report for Munich and Freising from the same law firm.

"I think it will be presented next year," said the cardinal.

Woelki had originally commissioned an expert opinion from a Munich law firm.

The office should investigate the way the archdiocese dealt with allegations of sexual abuse of children and young people by priests.

After the law firm had completed the report, Woelki decided not to publish it.

To this end, he cited legal concerns and referred to the advice of lawyers who were called in, who blamed the expert opinion on methodological deficiencies.

The law firm rejected this.

Instead, Woelki commissioned a Cologne criminal lawyer to draw up a new expert report.

It should be ready in March.
