Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, numerous shops are opening today for the last time before the start of the lockdown.

From Wednesday they will have to remain closed until January 10th, public life will be shut down due to the persistently high number of corona infections.

Shops that offer everyday necessities such as supermarkets, drug stores or pharmacies are allowed to remain open during the lockdown.

The sale of Christmas trees is also still allowed.

The Rhineland-Palatinate trade association had criticized the store closings in the run-up to Christmas of all times.

There are also concerns that January 10th will not be the last day of closure.
