Berlin (dpa) - With a petition "to the political decision-makers of the Federal Republic of Germany", numerous cultural workers want to see culture anchored in the Basic Law as a "collective social interest".

"The cultural quality of a society is its real wealth," it said in an open letter published on Monday.

"Democracy needs a cultural dialogue and the appreciation of art and culture on the part of politics."

Supporters include filmmaker Wim Wenders, trumpeter Till Brönner, theater director Shermin Langhoff, musician Sebastian Krumbiegel, Kampnagel director Amelie Deuflhard and Rammstein keyboardist Christian “Flake” Lorenz.

«Culture in all its forms makes an elementary contribution to socio-political education», write the initiators.

"We therefore demand that the protection of art and culture and the right to unlimited participation of all citizens in cultural life and in cultural education be anchored in the Basic Law."

The freedom of art is already anchored in the Basic Law.

The cultural sovereignty rests with the countries where corresponding formulations are already in many national constitutions.

At the federal level there have already been several initiatives to establish culture, for example as a state goal in the Basic Law.

The left parliamentary group in the Bundestag last called for this in the summer.
