Kolding (AP) - The German handball players have gambled away the best possible starting position to advance to the semi-finals of the European Championship in Denmark.

After the 27:28 (15:14) defeat in the second main round game against the Netherlands on Monday evening, the group final against Croatia will now take place.

In the duel with the Croatians this Tuesday (6.15 p.m.), the DHB selection absolutely needs a victory to maintain the chance of the semi-final ticket.

If the Dutch win against Romania before, Germany must win with at least two goals.

Otherwise a win with a goal against Croatia would be enough.

Led by the outstanding goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle, the German team showed one of their best tournament performances against the Dutch women over long stretches.

Julia Behnke and Kim Naidzinavicius were the best throwers in the DHB selection, each with four goals, who missed some top-class chances in the final phase and thus missed at least one draw.
