December 14, 2020 The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has announced a referendum to add the fight against climate change and the defense of the environment in the Constitution.

"We have to keep moving forward and that work is even more urgent," Macron said.

The amendment to the Constitution requires a vote in Parliament and then a referendum.

The president acknowledged that France is not doing enough to be in line with its climate commitments to curb global warming and is failing to meet national targets set under the agreement concluded in Paris with Cop21 in 2015.

European Union leaders, including himself Macron, agreed Friday to strengthen the objectives of the continent by 2030 by cutting 55% of greenhouse gas emissions (instead of the initial 40%) compared to 1990.

"It will be a constitutional reform in an article "that" must pass first to the National Assembly and then to the Senate and be voted on in identical terms. That day it will be subject to a referendum ", assured the head of state at the conclusion of a meeting with the Convention of Citizens for the Climate.
