Coronavirus: New restrictions in Italy after surpassing its record of deaths in one day from coronavirus
Crowds in the streets, thousands of people queuing to buy and enter the restaurants, or bars crowded inside.
The Government of
Giuseppe Conte
could decide this Monday a new tightening of restrictions, after Italy became yesterday in the European country with more deaths from coronavirus, after beating UK.
In total, since the start of the pandemic, the transalpine country has recorded 1.8 million confirmed cases and
64,520 deaths from the virus compared to 64,170 in the United Kingdom
.
Only the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico surpass Italy in deaths.
The "Merkel model"
The current ban on traveling on Christmas days, December 26 and January 1, 2021 will be removed only for small municipalities, the rest of Italy will be considered a "red zone", which will prevent mobility between regions.
Only small towns will be able to have some mobility although the Government will recommend otherwise.
The "Merkel model" will be adopted, as the Minister of Health,
Roberto Speranza
, has repeatedly said
.
"It is important that everyone is aware that the situation continues to be very serious," he insists.
Conte, aware that citizens have been restricted for ten months, launched a new appeal via Facebook last night: "We have all made big and small sacrifices for months in the battle against Covid-19. Our national community, despite A thousand difficulties, it
has managed to show a strong spirit of cohesion
and a great sense of responsibility. I am convinced that we will continue to show this solidity also in the coming weeks, on the occasion of the Christmas holidays. "
The third wave
" We
need to
assess the risk to health and we
need experts to
analyze the situation. If there is imminent danger of a third wave after the holidays, we must intervene to avoid the crowds ,
" reported
yesterday the justice minister,
Alfonso Bonafede
, who represents the Five Star Movement, during an urgent summit called yesterday by the prime minister.
Today, the Scientific Technical Committee will outline the different scenarios and then suggest the appropriate measures to avoid the epidemiological curve rising again during the holidays.
It
will
also
take into account the pressure that hospitals would suffer
from unleashing this third wave and what could happen with the return to school set for January 7.
The meetings
The Minister of the Interior,
Luciana Lamorgese,
will also report today on the controls carried out and the fines imposed, but especially on the measures taken in the last hours to avoid crowds:
numerous squares and shopping streets closed after crowds occurred.
The red zones
The increase in the positivity rate in Italy is alarming.
Therefore, although the majority of the regions will already return to the "yellow zone" next week, throughout Italy it has been decided to activate the bans of the
"orange zone" or even "red" on holidays and days before holidays
.
This entails closing bars, restaurants and shops, with the exception of pharmacies, tobacconists and kiosks.
This Monday it will be decided when the new regulations come into force, it could be from the 19th.
Small municipalities
Those who expected a broad repeal of the ban on moving between municipalities will be disappointed with the new measures.
On Christmas Day, December 26 and January 1, 2021 it will only be possible to leave the borders of municipalities
with less than 5,000 inhabitants
to reach places that are located a maximum distance of 30 kilometers.
It cannot be ruled out that during the debate today the least restrictive version of the norm will be approved, "but if this is the case - Conte and Speranza warn - it will be Parliament that takes responsibility for what may happen later."
The reasoning leaves no margin:
"If a third wave occurs, the person who caused it will have to answer for it
.
