The woman was in her 80s and had previously suffered a pelvic fracture.

When the pain did not go away, she applied again to the orthopedic clinic at Region Sörmland.

An X-ray was taken there which showed new injuries to the woman's pelvis, but neither of the two doctors who looked at the X-rays assessed the injuries as serious.

Made the report

The woman was sent home and prescribed pain relief and physiotherapy.

But the pain did not go away and the woman searched again and a cancerous tumor was discovered in the pelvis.

The cancer had then spread so much that the woman could not be cured.

The woman died shortly afterwards and now Region Sörmland has Lex Maria-reported the incident.

New routine

The report states that the woman might have been able to receive treatment if the cancer had been discovered in an initial stage.

In order for something similar not to happen again, the orthopedic clinic has introduced a new routine which means that the X-ray department will henceforth always decide whether it is possible to exclude cancer based on the X-ray images.
