State-owned Vattenfall will help Estonia build new small nuclear power plants.

- We have agreed that we will work together on a project to see if it is possible to build a small modular reactor in Estonia, says Torbjörn Wahlborg, head of electricity production at Vattenfall.

Lay down and build new

Vattenfall will thus help build new nuclear power in Estonia, 50 km from the head office in Solna, Stockholm.

At the same time, at the turn of the year, the company will close a reactor 50 km in the opposite direction in Ringhals, Sweden.

- I think it is very remarkable that you shut down nuclear power in Sweden at the same time as you invest in nuclear power in the Baltics.

I would like to see something similar done in Sweden, says the moderates' energy policy spokesperson, Lars Hjälmered to SVT.

Done in ten years

Vattenfall's Estonian partner, Fermi Energia, has begun planning for where in Estonia the nuclear power plants will be located.

Nuclear power plants which, according to Vattenfall, can be in place in ten years.

- Yes, it is a fairly concrete project.

There are two locations that are potential, says Torbjörn Wahlborg, at Vattenfall

Minister of the Environment Isabella Lövin does not want to comment on Vattenfall's nuclear cooperation in Estonia, but refers to Minister of Trade and Industry Ibrahim Baylan.

He in turn refers all questions to Vattenfall.
