Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller has justified the upcoming tough lockdown to contain the corona pandemic with the protection of the population.

"Ultimately, health protection remains the benchmark," said the SPD politician on Sunday after the Prime Minister had a call with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

"Health protection is the alpha and omega."

Of course, the vaccinations, which will probably start soon, are linked to the hope of regaining some normalcy.

“But it will take some time before many are really protected by the vaccinations.

That means we have to continue to be careful, (...) we have to keep avoiding contacts. "

And such contacts would also arise in schools and retail stores, even if everyone adhered to the rules of distance and hygiene there.

The federal and state governments agreed on Sunday on a hard lockdown of several weeks from Wednesday to January 10th with the closure of many shops, schools and daycare centers.
