Darmstadt (dpa / lhe) - After the federal and state governments have announced a lockdown for Germany, the Church President of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN) Volker Jung calls for “good and clear orientation as soon as possible” for the churches.

The focus is on the question of how church services should be handled at Christmas, said Jung on Sunday.

"Everyone wants the Christmas message to reach and empower people, and everyone wants people to be protected and not endangered," the statement said.

"It would rightly be perceived as a contradiction to the message of the festival if services endanger human lives."

Nevertheless, it is important to accompany people with pastoral care during this time.

According to Jung, the coordination of the Protestant churches in Germany and with the Catholic Church on how to proceed is already underway.

The federal and state governments announced a tough lockdown for Germany on Sunday in view of the continued high number of new infections with the corona virus.

This should come into force next Wednesday.
