Hanover (dpa / lni) - In view of the discussion about a nationwide closure of the stationary retail trade due to the corona development, the shops in Lower Saxony and Bremen felt a lively demand on Saturday.

"Compared to the previous weeks you can tell that more people have been there," said the general manager of the Lower Saxony-Bremen trade association, Mark Alexander Krack, in Hanover.

The stronger buyer interest could already be felt in the past week.

But that shouldn't hide the fact that sales before the 3rd Advent this year would be 40 to 50 percent below those of the previous year, said Krack.

However, people bought more purposefully - probably in the expectation that the stores could be closed.

If a nationwide closure of the retail trade, with the exception of the grocery stores, is decided on Sunday, an aid plan for the shops would have to be put in place at the same time, Krack demanded.

A takeover of up to 75 percent of the sales of the corresponding period of the previous year as in the catering trade is probably not possible in the trade.

"But at least there should be a solution for the fixed costs."

The dealers would have to continue to pay rents, and not every business would be able to switch to online trading immediately.

According to Krack, articles were in demand that would traditionally be bought before Christmas: clothing, watches, jewelry, but also technology.

It is noticeable that many retailers are already advertising special offers.

That is actually unusual for the Christmas business, but the dealers have to sell the goods.
