On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the US presidential election system as outdated and distorts the will of the people.

He said during an Internet press conference that compared to other major countries in the world, the US electoral system "is probably the oldest."

He added that this system, in its current form, "greatly distorts the will of the population."

Lavrov expressed his belief that US foreign policy in the era of Joe Biden will be similar to that during the rule of former President Barack Obama, especially with regard to Iran and the climate.

Earlier, Lavrov made it clear in a statement on Wednesday that his country could not congratulate Biden, until the official results were announced.

He also said, "The (US) State Department has not yet recognized the presidential elections," noting that his American counterpart, Mike Pompeo, called for patience until all votes were counted.

The Kremlin said on Monday that it would await the official results of the US presidential elections before commenting on its outcome, noting that it takes into account the announcement by incumbent President Donald Trump of presenting legal challenges in the voting process.

Russian President Vladimir Putin - unlike many world leaders - did not congratulate Biden on winning due to court complaints, but he sent a congratulatory message to Trump in 2016, an hour after announcing his victory.

Putin has won 4 presidential elections, and recently changed the constitution to allow him to remain president until 2036, and Biden will be the fourth president of the United States since Putin came to power in 2000.
