Despite serious challenges, the EU is able to act and compromise.

For this, the EU leaders congratulated themselves extensively after the summit in Brussels. But shouldn't it be a matter of course that 27 countries that are committed to common goals and values are able to act?

And what use are compromises if they are mediocre or leave a lot open?

After all: Chancellor Merkel managed to keep things together at the head of the German Council Presidency.

That’s something in this EU.

Merkel is the only real leader in Europe.

The reduction in CO2 emissions by 55 percent by 2030 is a huge success for them - but it remains completely open how the associated rising costs are to be reduced.

Merkel was once again on the brakes when it came to sanctions against Turkey.

Because of the gas exploration off Cyprus, only a few Turkish company representatives are now being sanctioned - that's it.

The Turkish President Erdogan will have understood the signal: he can continue to fool the Europeans.

The corona aid package of 750 billion euros, in turn, is certainly a success for Merkel and Commission head von der Leyen.

But the price is high: the way for joint debt liability in the EU is free - that can be expensive for German taxpayers.

At the same time, little is left of the demand for a “rule of law mechanism” - money is only given to those who adhere to the EU's fundamental values.

And this despite the fact that more and more EU heads of government are not so strict about the rule of law.

After six months of EU presidency, Merkel's record is mixed.
